Malostranske namesti 25, Praha 1
St Nicholas’ Church was built at the site of an old parish church, constructed in the Gothic style in 1283. The later Baroque building was founded by the Jesuits and its construction started in 1703. The church is the work of Krystof and Kilian Ignatz Dientzenhofers, a father and a son, who constructed many other buildings in Prague during the high-Baroque period. St Nicholas’ Church, however, is the most beautiful masterpiece created by them. The Dientzenhofers built the main nave of the church, a frontispiece with three entrances, a choir and finally a monumental dome. The construction of the church was finished in 1751 by Anselmo Lurago, who designed a bell tower at the back of the church. In 1760s, the beautiful interior decoration of the church was made by prominent Czech Baroque artists, such as J. L. Kracker and F. X. Palko. The dimension of the building is considerable: the church is 40 meters wide, 60 meters long and 70 meters high, which makes it the largest Prague church founded by the Jesuits.
